There are many misconceptions about what people believe it means to be a Christian. Some have proposed that it is a way to live a good life on earth. To be wealthy, to have a good career, or to find a kingdom relationship. Ultimately, people are trying to add God to their lives as a safety net to say, “now that I believe God, He will make my life on earth great.”
This could not be further from the truth and the reality of salvation.
As many of you know, I am expecting my first child, and from the moment life was conceived inside of me, I knew something was different. I felt it! From then on, I knew that I had to be mindful about everything I did in order to not disturb or disrupt the growth process of this new life. My body, my wants, and my desires were no longer my focus because my growing child took every form of strength and nutrients from me in order to survive. I found out very quickly that I could not go to the places I wanted to, I could not eat only bad foods or decide not to eat at all because it made me feel sick, but I was subject to the needs of my baby at my expense. All with the goal of seeing her come forth as healthy, happy baby!
The same is true in Christ.
You must be born again to become a Christian and develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
What does it mean to be born again?
In the same way sperm meets the egg and conceives life, God’s Spirit by the Word of God acts as sperm to your spirit to conceive a new spiritual life.
What is a spiritual life?
Let’s go back to Genesis when God made Adam. The scripture says that God formed man from the dust of the ground, breathed the breath of the life into its nostrils, then man became of a living soul (Genesis 2:7). This illustrates that mankind is a triune being.
What is a triune being?
Mankind is made up of three parts. First, we ARE a spirit. God is a Spirit so when He made us in His image and likeness, He also made us as spirits (John 4:24, Genesis 1:26). We have a soul which is our personality that is shown forth in our will, emotions, and mind. Lastly, your spirit and soul are placed into a physical body to express itself.
You are not your body in the same way that you are not your car! Your body is like a car you drive to do things, go places, and express yourself.
Why do we need to be born again?
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit, God told them that in the day they eat of it, they would surely die (Genesis 2:16-17). If we study on, we find out that when they ate the forbidden fruit, they did not physically die but they died spiritually. Their spirits, which were once connected to God’s Spirit, died and they lost their personal relationship with Him which is evident because He kicked them out of the Garden of Eden where He once lived with them (Genesis 3:23-24). Therefore, Adam and Eve were forced to use their 5 senses (what they saw, heard, felt, tasted, and smelled) to lead them through life.
Our senses can be deceiving because what might look good may not be good for you or what might look like fun may really be detrimental to you.
That is why the goal of salvation is to revive our spirits by becoming born again and yield our souls to God through obedience so that we can reconnect with God to be led by His Spirit and not our senses.
Why do we need to be led by God’s Spirit?
We need to be led by God’s Spirit because God is Truth and He won’t deceive us (John 14:6). He knows the end from the beginning so when we trust in Him, we can rely on the fact that He will not led us to a trap (Isaiah 46:10).
But that process of being born again does not begin and end with a one time confession. The spirit that is reborn inside of you must grow and develop just like a new baby in the womb. You cannot continue to live the life you always have and think the baby will grow to maturity. That is what is wrong with modern-day, false Christianity, it is not explaining how your life is not yours anymore. You can’t use your body as you see fit. Jesus Christ requires that we sacrifice our life, body, will, and desires for Him to use.
Romans 12: 1-2 NLT says “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice-the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
Because Jesus Christ came to earth as a man and sacrificed His life for us on the cross, now He is requiring as a reciprocal offering that each one of us present our bodies to Him for Him to live through to perform God’s will.
Therefore, just as my body and life are not my own as baby girl grows inside of me, my body and life are not my own as Christ grows His spiritual life in me.
