Rooted and Grounded

…And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.  - Ephesians 3:17-19 NIV

 

Our lives are built on a foundation.  Some foundations are built on accomplishments.  Others on reputation. Some foundations are built on past hurts and experiences.  The foundation in our lives shapes our identity, and it determines how we build our lives and the decisions we make.  If the foundation is faulty, our identities will be shaky, we will lack confidence, or we will build our identity around things that are fleeting and unsure.



So, what is a sure foundation?  There is much talk today about knowing your roots and being grounded.  This also speaks to the foundation in someone’s life.  For some, being rooted and grounded may lie in their culture or ethnic identity.  For others, it lies in a belief system or spirituality.  However, the Word of God tells us that we are to be rooted and grounded in the love of Christ.  This is our foundation, from which we find our true identity.  When we are rooted and grounded in the love of God, we have the confidence that is found in Him because we do not have to look for identity anywhere else.  This is a sure foundation because God is eternal and He doesn’t change.  His love is constant.

 

When we truly understand the depth of God’s love for us, it compels us to respond in specific ways including - repentance, relationship, and righteousness.  Jesus showed His love for us by dying on the cross for our sins and we can partake in this love when we repent - which means we turn away from, and no longer continue in, sin.  Repentance opens the door to a relationship with Jesus Christ through which He imparts to us His righteousness.  His love is the foundation and through relationship, He cultivates in us a righteous, heavenly identity.  There is no other foundation that will establish us.  There is no other means by which we can be rooted and grounded. 

 

If the storms of life are testing your foundation, if you lack confidence, or direction in life - take time this month to reflect on whether you are rooted and grounded in the love of Christ.  Life is full of peaks and valleys, highs and lows, but with the right foundation, we can withstand whatever comes our way because we have a sure foundation, firmly established and grounded in the love of Christ.  So, be encouraged in your journey today!  Christ is an anchor that holds us in the storm and He desires that we respond to his demonstration of love towards us so we are rooted and grounded in Him.
